Fugue State

A fugue-state is "a state of mind where a person experiences a dissociative break in identity and attempts to run away from some perceived threat, usually something abstract such as the person's identity." Think David Lynch.

But, see it's more interesting than that. Fugue-state is also used to describe the state of mind of a performer or artist in rapture. It's 'being in the moment' and cut off from other concerns and to me it seems tied up in Zen, koans and the state of un-being.

"Vienna in a fugue-state working on a thing
That, when he finished, it took almost seven hours to sing."

Very interesting.

Comments

Shouldn't the term "fugue state" refer to what a fugue actually is? Usually written as an exercise, with little practical worth or artistic merit? Much like the previous news article?

It just confuses the musician in me.

Actually, it does refer to what a fugue 'actually is'. Fugue == fuge == fuga <- Latin fuga (flight) and fugere (to flee).

So, a flight (fleeing) state is one in which someone is running away from something. See, that seems to make a whole lot more sense than calling a bunch of complex counterpoint 'fleeing'.

In conclusion, f--k you.

Two words: Jim Morrison.

"I wannabewannabewannabe Jim Morrison"

Still, he just ripped off Kerouac with his "shooting star" quote.
